7 Simple Ways to Improve Your Website in 30 Minutes or Less
Everyone online is screaming about how badly they want to get off the hamster wheel of running an online business. Yet so very few are willing -or know how to - do the unseen, foundational work it takes to make that happen!
My goal is to help guide and support you through this very important, foundational work. Because I believe your work is far too important to neglect.
And listen, I can’t stress enough the importance of your website in your business foundations. Your website doesn’t have a” follower-account” - if a person lands on your website for the first time they have no idea if this is your very first day on the job or your one thousandth. Your website builds a level of trustworthiness right away! Not to mention the searchability and ownership you have over your website that you simply cannot have on a social media platform - even on Substack.
Your website NEEDS to be at the center of your business strategy!
Because let me tell you, if posting frantically to your Instagram with a link to a book a discovery call is your whole business strategy it’s gonna fall flat quickly.
A strategic, clear, and very YOU website - this is a strategy that will stand the test of time.
(Unlike the most recent TikTok trends 👀)
Websites will not be going away anytime soon, in fact - with the rise of AI, exhausting social media trends, and so much misinformation, your website is more important than ever.
And before I dive into the practical advice can I just take a moment to say - I GET IT. Truly. I understand why the foundations are tricky! It can feel overwhelming for one. Where should you even start!? And what if you spend all this time doing “foundational” work only to put your efforts in the wrong place?
Plus, those coveted Instagram likes the the endless scroll really do FEEL productive. I get it. I’ve been there. Actually, to be more honest in many ways I am CURRENTLY there and have recently been shaken awake and realized - it’s time to start practicing what I preach! (Which is why I started the FOUNDATIONS over FLOURISHES challenge.)
All that to say - you’re not bad at business.
You just need a plan! And I’ve made you one. Well, I’ve made you a template so you can create your own! GET YOURS (for free) HERE.
Okay, enough about that, let’s get back to websites!
The best part about websites is that they are meant to be refined over time. Making your website more professional, user-friendly, and effective doesn’t have to take all day. In fact, you can knock out these 7 simple updates in 30 minutes or less. Brew yourself a cuppa coffee or make an old-fashioned, pull up a chair, and get to work!
1. Use Just One H1 Header Per Page
Every single page on your website should have only one H1 header. Why? Because that’s what helps search engines understand what the page is about—boosting your SEO and making your content easier to find.
Here’s a pro tip: make your H1 and H2 styles identical in your global font settings. That way, you can still have that big, beautiful font you love throughout your site without confusing your design hierarchy. Use H3 for subheaders and skip H4 unless you have a specific reason for it.
Choose your true H1 strategically—usually, it’s the main sentence above the fold, but not always. In the case of this blog post, it’s the title of this article! Make it keyword-rich and clear - but prioritize it sounding like YOU over “searchability”. Then use H2s for everything else that looks like a header, but isn’t the real H1.
2. Clean Up Your Menu
Keep your main navigation simple. Aim for 3–4 menu items, 5 max. Anything more becomes overwhelming and clutters your design—especially on mobile (which is where 80–90% of your site visitors are coming from, by the way).
Pop all the secondary menu items like the contact page, specific links to your offerings, and an email opt-in on the footer of your website.
A clean menu helps guide your visitors through the client journey you’ve mapped out, reduces decision fatigue, and helps them get where they need to go faster.
3. Add a Clear CTA Button in the Top Right Corner
Most people scan websites in a Z-pattern—starting at the top left, sweeping across to the top right (hello, CTA button!), then diagonally down.
Place a bold, unmistakable Call to Action (CTA) button in the upper right corner of your site. On mobile, this typically becomes the last item in your dropdown menu, which is perfect—it’s prominent and hard to miss.
Your CTA should align with your current goals. Launching something new? Point that button to your lead magnet. Booking clients? Link it to your services page. The key is: be intentional with where it leads.
4. Don’t Get Carried Away With Center-Aligned Text (You’re making your potential clients work too hard.)
Listen, I love a pretty website as much as the next creative entrepreneur. But center-aligned text? It’s harder to read. It literally burns more brain calories to process.
Use it sparingly - and never for long paragraphs or bulleted lists. If you’ve got more than a few sentences, align left and let your people read without friction. It’s a tiny change with a big impact on usability (and sales).
Yes, even on your emails - even if it looks “cute.”
5. Cut Down the Copy on Your Homepage
Your homepage isn’t a novel - think of it more like a highway. Its job is to direct people where to go next, not to give them every single detail upfront.
Use short, clear headers (remember those H2s!), a couple of well-written sentences underneath, and link to full pages for things like your about page, services, and even a freebie sales page. The idea is to spark curiosity and then guide them deeper.
Let the homepage do what it’s meant to do: route, not explain.
6. Your About Page Isn’t Actually About You
Here’s the hard truth: your About page is not about you. It’s about how your story connects to your ideal customer/client’s story and their transformation.
Start with them, speak directly to them, and share how your experience, values, and mission help them reach their goals. Keep this mindset across your entire website—every word should reflect how you serve your people.
A little tip: Say “you” as if you’re speaking directly to them - and say it often. It’ll help you to connect with your audience much faster!
7. Repeat Yourself (A Lot)
People do not - will not - read every word on your website. You don’t. I don’t. So stop assuming your audience will!
Instead, repeat your core message on every page—what you do, who you help, and how. You can say it the same way or mix it up a bit, but don’t be afraid of repetition. It builds clarity, trust, and connection.
You’re not being annoying—you’re being strategic and helping your website users by not making them look through every page on your website to get the information that they need! It’s a win, win!
